Recently Diagnosed With a Serious Illness? What You Can Still Do.
A serious diagnosis changes everything. Putting your affairs in order can bring a real sense of control at an uncertain time.

Receiving a serious diagnosis is life-changing. In the midst of processing the news, managing treatment, and coming to terms with what lies ahead, thinking about legal and financial matters may feel like the last thing you want to do. Yet for many people, putting their affairs in order brings an unexpected sense of peace and control at a time when so much feels uncertain.
The important thing to understand is that a diagnosis does not take these options away from you. There is a great deal you can still do to protect yourself and your loved ones, and taking these steps sooner rather than later gives you the clearest path forward.
Why Acting Sooner Matters
When facing a serious illness, time and capacity can both become more precious. Putting arrangements in place while you are well enough to do so, and while you have the mental capacity to make clear decisions, means your wishes can be properly recorded and your loved ones protected.
This is not about expecting the worst. It is about taking sensible action while you are in the best possible position to do so, rather than leaving things until they become more difficult or until the opportunity to act has passed.
Making or Updating Your Will
If you do not have a Will, putting one in place should be a priority. A Will ensures that your Estate passes to the people you choose, rather than being distributed according to the Rules of Intestacy, which may not reflect your wishes at all.
If you already have a Will, a diagnosis is a natural moment to review it and make sure it still reflects your current circumstances and wishes. Your priorities may have shifted, or your situation may have changed since you last looked at it. Ensuring your Will is current gives you confidence that your affairs are in order.
Putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in Place
One of the most important things you can do is put Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. These documents allow you to appoint trusted people to make decisions on your behalf if, at some point, you become unable to make them yourself.
There are two types. A Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney allows your chosen people to manage your finances, pay bills, and deal with your property. A Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney allows them to make decisions about your medical care and treatment if you are no longer able to.
Having these in place means that, whatever happens, the people you trust can step in and act for you, avoiding the stress and difficulty your family would otherwise face.
Recording Your Wishes About Your Care
Alongside a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney, you may also wish to consider an Advance Directive, sometimes called an Advance Decision or Living Will. This allows you to set out your specific wishes about medical treatments you would or would not want to receive in the future.
For many people facing a serious illness, having their wishes about their care clearly recorded brings real reassurance. It means that, even if you reach a point where you cannot communicate those wishes yourself, they will still be known and respected.
Thinking About the Practical Details
Beyond the main legal documents, a diagnosis is also a good time to make sure the practical details of your affairs are clear and accessible. This might include making sure your loved ones or Executors know where your important documents are kept, what your Estate consists of, and any specific wishes you have.
Taking the time to organise this information, and to record your wishes clearly, can make an enormous difference to those who will need to manage things on your behalf, sparing them additional difficulty at an already hard time.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Perhaps the most important thing to know is that you do not have to navigate any of this by yourself. Putting your affairs in order after a serious diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but with the right guidance it becomes far more manageable.
Having someone to guide you through what to prioritise, explain your options clearly, and handle the process with sensitivity means you can take these steps without added stress, and with the reassurance that everything is being done properly.
